Census 1940: Voitle-Gordon

In the 1940’s Census we find Harry Voitle (Age 63) widowed, but still living at 91 Waddell’s Run Road with several of his children and grandchildren. Several of the names are spelled incorrectly by the census taker. Sarah instead of Shirley, and Gene instead of Jean.

Harry Jr (18), Ethel (20) and Frank (15) are still at home.

Note that several people have a martial status of “M” but with a diagonial line through it and what appears to be a 7 next to it written in. We know that Harry is Widowed by this point, Sarah Elizabeth is seperated from Charles Seifert. I had not known that Aunt Ruth had been married to a “Berry“. Elinora has also passed by this point and we see that Jean Huggins is living with the family.

We see that Sarah is beginning to use Elizabeth as her preferred name by this point too. Elizabeth’s two children: Barbara (10) and Shirley (not Sarah) (6),

Harry is a gardner at Oglebay Park, Harry Jr is a laborer at a steel mill, Ethel is a maid for a private home. Elizabeth is shown as unable to work, Ruth is engaged in housework, and Frank is in school.

Harry made about $850 in the previous 12 months ending Dec 31, 1939, Ethel made about $150.
